Fiji’s Shark Diving

Shark feeding and commercial sharkdiving is a controversial topic among scientists, activists and the public. Oftentimes times, discussions wander off into false narratives and unfounded claims. Science suggests that - IF done correctly - shark diving can have a net beneficial effect on shark conservation.

Shark feeding in all its forms is a complex topic that has to be studied case by case, but given the plight of many shark populations nowadays we need to consider every tool in the toolbox that may aid conservation efforts.

Since 2015, I have been documenting the shark diving industry in Fiji, conducting my own shark research, writing popular science articles, and producing several films besides photographing extensively. I even wrote an entire book about Fiji’s Shark Reef Marine Reserve, a unique shark diving operation that led to the declaration of Fiji’s first national marine protected area in 2014.
